2016 Season Updates:

2.) Waukegan Band to perform with the 85th Army Band, from the Lake County News Sun:
Bands to Join in Military SaluteBands to join in military salute
by Sheryl DeVore News-Sun July 5, 2016
Two long-lived bands, the 85th Army Band activated in 1943, and the Waukegan Band, formed in the late-1930s, will join July 19 for a concert dedicated to the nation's armed forces.
Cmdr. James Walker leads the Army Band.; Mark Taylor leads the Waukegan Band.
Walker said when speaking to Taylor about the upcoming concert, Taylor "mentioned the beautiful setting in the venue." The Stiner Pavilion's backdrop is Lake Michigan, and on a clear day, the Chicago skyline is visible across the water.
"When we can gather in a place such as that venue and have a peaceful gathering and enjoy a concert, we have to remember the only reason we can do that is because of the men and women right now who are in places that aren't so nice who are protecting us," Walker said.
Each band will play patriotic music, then perform several pieces together.
The Army Band will open with music from the movie "Silverado."
"It has a nice opening setting to it, which allows a narration we've inserted, welcoming people to the concert and introducing our commanding general," Walker said.
He'll next lead the band in "Midway March" by American composer John Williams,..
"It showcases our wonderful woodwind section," Walker said. "It has some great technical parts."
After that, the group will play "British 8th March" by Zo Elliott.
"It gives the audience a chance to listen to a different style of a march," Walker said. "British marches are typically performed at a slower tempo than American marches. They also have a completely different sound and harmonics."
The Army band also will play "Duty, Honor, Country," music that accompanies a famous speech Gen. Douglas MacArthur gave at West Point Academy, and a guest vocalist will perform "A Letter from Mom," based on an actual letter written by the mother of a soldier.
"It's very poignant," Walker said. "The most telling line is when the mother says: 'He doesn't want to go, but he has to go.'"
The Waukegan Band will join the 85th Army Band for the finale, which includes "America the Beautifu," and "Armed Forces Medley."
"We do the medley at every concert," Walker said. "We'll recognize our veterans and families, those who have served, are serving, or their family members." He does that by shaking hands and saluting people in the audience.
"No military concert would be final without 'Stars and Stripes Forever' by John Philip Sousa, the American march king," Walker said.
